CHAPTER
Six
‘Look! Watch this!’ Allegra exclaimed.
The breeze that Allegra had just conjured swirled a single leaf into the air before growing stronger and stronger, picking up more and more leaves until there was a twirling cloud of them. Then the breeze died down and the leaves floated to the floor until there was only a single leaf left.
‘Wind be gone,’ Allegra whispered as the last leaf drifted to the ground.
‘That was fantastic!’ Ella cried.
Faye nodded. ‘I’ve never seen you have so much control.’
‘The star stones make such a difference!’ Allegra said, her eyes shining. ‘I just concentrated on them and suddenly I knew I could control the wind. It was an amazing feeling. You try, Ella.’
Lucy watched as Ella touched her hand to her earrings and focused on a patch on the ground. A little forget-me-not grew up, its tiny sky-blue flower head bobbing up and down. And then another and another until there were six round patches of them on the floor of the clearing.
‘Cool!’ Allegra said. ‘It’s so easy with the star stones, isn’t it?’
‘Yeah,’ Ella said, grinning. She caught sight of Lucy’s face and looked suddenly guilty. ‘I wish you had your star stone too, Lucy.’
Lucy nodded. She hated not being able to do anything. The others started practising again.
‘Lucy.’
Lucy looked round. Xanthe was walking over to her. ‘It must be hard just watching. Would you like to practise too?’
‘But I thought you said I couldn’t because of the weather,’ Lucy said. ‘And anyway, I haven’t got my star stone.’
‘There’s enough of us here to deal with a fire if it gets out of control,’ Xanthe said glancing around the clearing where the older stardust spirits were exchanging news. ‘And as for your star stone, well, you don’t need that. Controlling your magic is all down to you – you just need to concentrate and believe that you can. Come on, let’s have a try.’
Lucy followed Xanthe and knelt on the ground.
‘Now let’s see if you can start a small fire and then take it right down to being just a smouldering log,’ Xanthe suggested. ‘Breathe in first. You need to be feeling calm and in control.’
Lucy took a deep breath. Starlight fell on her bare arms, making them shimmer. She stared at a fallen branch.
‘Just believe you can do it,’ Xanthe told her softly.
Lucy stretched out her hands. ‘Fire, be with me,’ she breathed.
Power started to surge through her, hot and tingling. She felt it build but this time she didn’t let it get too strong. Small fire, small fire, she thought, concentrating hard. The fallen branch burst into flame. Lucy stared at the flickering, crackling fire. It wasn’t getting any bigger. I can do this, she realized. I can control it.
‘Make it get smaller,’ Xanthe prompted her.
Shrink, Lucy thought. The fire began to die down. It was hard and took a lot of effort.
If I had my star stone I bet this would be easier. The thought crossed Lucy’s mind before she knew it.
The flames flared upwards.
